Background: Bovine parainfluenza virus 3 is an enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA ((-)ssRNA) virus, belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family and genetically and antigenically related to human parainfluenza virus 3. Three genotypes, A (BPIV3a), B (BPIV3b) and C (BPIV3c) have been described, based on genetic and phylogenetic analysis. BPIV3 infections are found in a wide variety of mammals including cattle, humans, sheep, goats, bisons, guinea pigs, rhinoceros, moose, bighorn sheep and camels. Cross-species infections have been reported. Usually, viral infection is asymptomatic or associated with only mild respiratory symptoms. In cattle it is associated with the clinical picture known as shipping fever. It is an important virus of the bovine respiratory disease complex. When coinfection with other pneumonia-associated agents (e.g. respiratory syncytial virus, bacteria) is present, severe respiratory disease may develop.

Description: ViroReal^® Kit Bovine Parainfluenza Virus 3 is based on the amplification and detection of the phosphoprotein P gene of the so far known BPIV3 genotypes A, B and C using one-step reverse transcription real-time PCR.

PCR-platforms: ViroReal^® Kit Bovine Parainfluenza Virus 3 is developed and validated for the ABI PRISM^® 7500 instrument (Life Technologies), LightCycler^® 480 (Roche) and Mx3005P^® QPCR System (Agilent), but is also suitable for other real-time PCR instruments.
